Description

Red Oracle is an illustration of intricate ways that humans rely on birds for spiritual guidance. The first mentioned oracles were mostly female priestesses to a particular deity, usually dwelling in a cave or other secluded location away from urban areas. They were prophetesses who uttered divine revelations and delivered prophecies in an ecstatic state to visitors seeking advice. They acted as media between the natural and the spiritual realms.
According to native Americans, messages from the spiritual realms can come in many forms, but the red cardinal has long been held as the most notable spiritual messenger. Some Native American cultures believe that the cardinal is an omen regarding relationships, that cardinals help them predict changes in the weather, serve as watchers and guardians, and still, others look to red cardinal sightings as a sign of what direction to travel or follow.
The painting portrays a red-haired woman-oracle in a state of trance-dance in deep woods listening to red cardinals' prophecies. She wears the nature-inspired disguise of a birch-tree dress and a bird-skull head gear to collect divinations from birds and reveal them to humans. There are twelve images related to red cardinal, including nine live birds, a skeleton and two separated skulls. The number 12 is associated with the cardinal. Cardinals are seen during all 12 months of the year. A cardinal's nest often contains 12 eggs. Native American lore holds that if you have encountered a cardinal, expect good luck to follow, possibly in 12 hours, 12 days, or at noon or midnight.
